Stop Trying to be "Original"

image reads: BLOG POST: Stop trying to be original and just be you!

No, seriously, stop trying. The more you try, the more you will end up stressing yourself out. If you want to write a story about vampire brothers falling in love with the same girl over and over because she has multiple doppelgangers, do that. If you want to write a story about a someone having to choose between a vampire and werewolf lover, do that too. Do it all, just do it how YOU would do it.

I wrote The Inevitability Of after my younger sibling, very type A and very averse to chaos, came to me one day extremely upset that something did not go as planned in her life. The witches, the slow burn, the family-saga drama, and the biblical lore remix all came after. Can you point to different, already established media with the same components? Absolutely. My original combos of comp titles was AHS: Coven, Family Matters, Ninth House (Leigh Bardugo), Legendborn (Tracy Deonn), and A Blade So Black (L.L. McKinney). I wasn't going to stop believing in my story just because other people wrote contemporary fantasies before me. That would be silly!

Which is the point of this post. If you're reading this, then you are more than likely embarking on some sort of creative endeavor and worried about it's originality in the marketplace. Don't be. There will be plenty to stress about when you hit the need to make an LLC, find an editor, start querying, deal with social media, etc etc.

So, if you need permission to write that historical remix of Tron, I give it to you. Mainly because I now want to read a historical remix of TRON! Will the bikes be one of those funny ones with the one big wheel and the solid lights become barbed streamers of some kind? Tell me! No, just write it and then send me a copy!
